View of Exwick from Exeter

Until recently Exwick was just a small hamlet to the north-west of Exeter in the Rural District of St Thomas, on the west of the River Exe. It's now part of the City of Exeter. If you want to know about Exwick, then have a look here. There is information about the three pubs in Exwick, links to maps, official statistics, a brief history, information about the milling industry and information about the administrative districts of Exwick - Exwick Parish and Exwick Ward. At the suggestion of Trevor Sharp of the Exwick Community Association, I added some of the information from this page to the Wikipedia entry for Exwick.

Devon County Council has an Exwick Community Page in their Library Local Studies Service. By using the 'Place Search' facility on their page and searching for the keyword 'Exwick' in 'All Resource Types' you can see what information they have concerning Exwick. There are a number of images of old Exwick.

There are some details about Exwick's population from the 2001 Census on the Exeter City Council website. Here is a link to their page of Key Facts about Exwick. There is a further link on that site where you can download the full 2001 Census of Population Ward Report for Exeter, to compare Exwick with other wards.

The Exwick Community Association is a charity run by the local people of Exwick, whose area covers the whole of Exwick ward. They took over the running of the new Community Centre in Kinnerton Way in December 2006 and are involved in a number of projects relating to Exwick. The Community Association website has further details of what they are doing and contact information.

Living Here - West of the Exe is a community website organised by Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum. It covers Alphington, Cowick, St. Thomas and Exwick and there are a number of interesting pages and pictures of Exwick on the site. Their main page about Exwick can be found here. They have recently produced a very informative leaflet called 'A local history trail around Old Exwick' which has details of a short walk around Exwick and points out a few interesting local sights.

Exeter Memories is a fascinating site about Exeter and there are many pages of information and pictures of Exwick, including some comprehensive research on the Exwick mills and pictures of the flooding in Exwick in the 1960s. Just put Exwick in the search box on the main page or use the site map to find Exwick.

Reading matter

There is very little published information about Exwick. The only book which is reasonably easily available (in Exeter, at least) is the rather dated No.6 in the 'Discovering Exeter' series by the Exeter Civic Society, which covers Exwick, St. Thomas, Alphington and Cowick.

For information about the Exwick flood relief channel there is also a very informative book called 'Exe in Flood' by Derek Elsom and Peter Keene. This is available from the Quay House Visitor Centre at 46 The Quay, Exeter, or directly from Thematic trails.
