Exwick Parish

St Andrews Church

St Andrews Church

There are two sorts of parishes in England: Ecclesiastical Parishes, centred on an Anglican church with a parochial church council, and Civil Parishes, which are part of local administration. Some areas have both, but the City of Exeter only has Ecclesiastical Parishes.

Exwick Parish is an Ecclesiastical Parish, which was created from the parish of St Thomas The Apostle in 1872, and is part of the Diocese of Exeter. This is a link to the website of St Andrew's Church, the Parish Church of Exwick, which was built during 1841-1842 and consecrated on September 26th 1842. Money to build the church was raised by subscription, aided with a grant of £500 from the Church Building Society. James Wentworth Buller (Member of Parliament for Crediton and Lord of the Manor) donated £100 and the site.

Exwick Parish Hall

Exwick Parish Hall

There is a Parish Hall next to the church, but it has nothing to do with the church. It was originally called Exwick Institution and was built in memory of the 1914-1918 war from £1 subscriptions. General Sir Redvers Buller VC (the son of James Wentworth Buller) had earlier donated the site.

The Parish Hall is possibly the ugliest building in Exwick, but it is difficult to take a good picture showing just how ugly it is, due to the large cedar tree in the grounds of the adjacent church. It doesn't look too bad from the front, but view it from the side and it can be seen to be a simple corrugated iron structure with at least two later brick additions at the front and back. The nicest thing that the Exwick Conservation Area Appraisal can say about it is that it is unsightly and does not make a positive visual contribution, detracting from the setting of the adjacent listed church.

Information about the charity which runs the Parish Hall, including contact information, can be found on the Charity Commission's website.
