Exwick Statistics

This page doesn't list reams of tedious statistics about Exwick: it shows where to find them, if that's what interests you. There is a wealth of statistics available about Exwick, if you know how to find it. Devon County Council's Facts and Figures pages have a lot of information about the County, and there is some information about Exwick, although most of it is buried within other documents. Exeter City Council also have similar Statistics pages with information about Exeter.

The Exeter City Council website has Key facts from the 2001 census for Exwick ward and their Census Ward Report for the whole of Exeter, which can be downloaded in pdf format, also contains information about Exwick.

More recent information about Deprivation in Exeter, which includes information about Exwick, is on Exeter City Council's Deprivation pages, where you can download The Geography of Deprivation in Exeter (Microsoft Word document), information from the 2007 Indices of Multiple Deprivation and profiles of the most deprived wards (pdf format). Devon County Council also have a page with Deprivation statistics for Exeter.

[Deprivation is a measure of how well-off an area is and is based on The English Indices of Deprivation 2004. These rank each Lower Super Output Area based on seven themes - Income, Employment, Health, Education, Barriers to Housing & Services, Crime and Living Environment. The lower the rank, the more socially deprived the area is.]

The Neighbourhood Statistics pages of the Office for National Statistics has a lot more detailed information about the area, if you are looking for it. Unfortunately, the ONS do not recognise Exwick as a valid name for an area, but if you enter any Exwick postcode, for example EX4 2ND in Box 1 on their page, and select Ward as the area that you are interested in, this will bring up a total of 243 datasets with statistics for Exwick Ward, grouped under 15 subject headings. From Population (8988 in 2001) to the number of fires attended by the Fire Service in 2006 (13), the ONS pages contain all of the statistics about Exwick you could desire.

If you are looking for information about a smaller area than Exwick Ward, for example the Conservation Area, then it's necessary to understand a little of how the ONS statistical geography works.

For statistical purposes, the Office of National Statistics has split the whole country into what they call 'Output Areas'. These output areas have then been grouped into what they call 'super output areas'. There are three layers of 'super output area', but the one most often used for statistical purposes is called a 'lower super output area' (LSOA). Lower super output areas have an average population of 1500, with a minimum population of 1000.

Exwick ward is made up of thirty Output Areas and these have been grouped into six 'Lower Super Output Areas' called -

If you want to view the ONS Neighbourhood Statistics for the lower super output areas in a similar way to the ward statistics, you can go to the same Neighbourhood Statistics pages as before, put in a suitable postcode for the LSOA but this time select 'Super Output Area' instead of 'Ward' in Box 2. Postcodes which are approximately in the centre of each LSOA are given below -

The ONS page includes a small map of the output area so that you can check that it covers the area that you are interested in.

Devon County Council's Strategic Intelligence Department have produced brief two-page 'Lower Super Output Area Profiles' for each of the above areas, with information from various sources as well as the Office of National Statistics. They include a map of the area and data on Population, Social Issues and Deprivation, Community Safety, Employment, Education, Household Characteristics and Transport. These are available in pdf format but are not currently available online. The contact details are -

The same Strategic Intelligence Department have also produced a series of documents which they call 'Mosaic Profiles' for the whole of Devon, and the Mosaic Profile for Exeter also includes some information about Exwick. According to the document, the majority of Exwick's population are classed as type B13 and B12 in a Mosaic group which is subjectively described as 'Happy Families'. There is more information about the Mosaic groups in the Appendix on the DCC website, which describes Group B as 'Families with focus on career and home, mostly younger age groups now raising children'. Type B13 are 'Young couples and families of modest education striving for an aspirational standard of living' and B12 are 'Mortgaged owner occupier families with middle income'.

[Mosaic is a classification system devised by a company called Experian which was originally designed to identify groups of consumer behaviour for marketing purposes. The data is obtained from a number of sources and each postcode is classified into 11 'Mosaic Groups' and then further subdivided into 61 'Mosaic Types' which is intended to help identify the key features of the households living in the postcode. Devon County Council, along with many other public bodies, uses 'Mosaic Public Sector'.]

If you are interested in crime statistics, Devon and Cornwall Police have information on Exwick crime levels on their website. There is information for the past three months on the number of incidents of burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, violence and anti-social behavior and how it compares with the previous year. Exwick's crime levels are said to be 'average' compared with the rest of Devon and Cornwall.
